This scholarship supports research master’s and doctoral candidates pursuing full-time research in any discipline. The scholarship lasts one to four years, depending on the degree and registration date. The maximum annual value is €31,000, including:

The Irish Research Council does not provide funding for research under any of the following prohibited areas:
Human cloning for reproductive purposes;
Genetic modification of human beings causes such changes but for research relating to cancer treatment of the gonads.
Creation of human embryos solely for stem cell procurement or research, including somatic cell nuclear transfer
New entrants can apply for funding for the entire duration of their degree: 1 year for a research master’s, two years for a structured research master’s, three years for a traditional doctoral degree, and four years for a structured doctoral degree.
Applicants who have already started their postgraduate degree can apply for partial funding based on their degree type and registration date.
Applicants with documented career breaks (e.g., maternity/paternity leave, illness) may have their eligibility period adjusted.
If they do not meet the bachelor’s requirement, all applicants need a first-class or upper-second-class honors bachelor’s or master’s degree.
Applicants must have an academic supervisor; the Irish Research Council does not assist in finding one.
Applicants can request adjustments to their eligibility period for reasons such as maternity/paternity leave, long-term illness, or other eligible career breaks.
Evidence of these breaks must be provided.
Applicants must not have previously held an Irish Research Council scholarship for the same degree level.
Non-EU applicants may still apply but will be considered under a separate category.
Applications will be deemed ineligible if:
More than one application is submitted for a given call.
The application is incomplete, exceeds word limits, or includes unrequested materials.
Any information provided is false or unverifiable, or if the Irish Research Council or another agency has already funded the research.
The project proposed is not original or distinct from other proposals supported by the same supervisor/mentor.
